[memht5] Netvibes Front-End Functionality
#post16349
I reviewed your suggestion summary, ajax + drag&drop is the way to go.

I really think that one of the fundamental aspects of MemHT being a portal is in providing users the ability to alter the front-end of a website to suit their particular needs.

That's why providing different templates or themes are so important, people like individuality, they prefer to have things their own way.

I think that is why Netvibes is so popular. It gives people a high level of customization, as long as the task of doing so remains simple and easy to do.

Sometime last year I found this Netvibes-like site: www.myownsite.us. It is created by an individual who I got in contact with briefly to see if he was willing to go Open Source with it and this is what he had to say:
quote
I've seriously thought about opening it up. I've love to get the
benefits of it being opened up to better developers (I'm not a
PHP/MySQL programmer by trade), but I just don't know if it would
get much attention...

As I mentioned before, not being a PHP/MySQL programmer, I know the code is pretty ugly. It's essentially code I pieced together from different places to accomplish what I was after. It's usable, I use it as my homepage, and so do a few friends and family members, but it's far from being a competitor to NetVibes.

I need to go over the code at least once more to make sure I don't have any passwords hardcoded anywhere, or anything dumb like that, but hopefully it's relatively safe.

I haven't replied since then, but I think the site as a Front-End replacement has a lot of potential.

That's my two-cents.

Well... MemHT permits to change the frontend elements (and their position) at almost 100%... netviebes is cool, but it's not a cms and hasn't even the same purposes.. it's something like a widgets aggregator / desktop.

What could be cool is to add the nv-drag&drop functionality to blocks so people can change their position... this can be done even on MemHT 4 because it depends of the template, not by the core.

Thank you nicegenius for your suggestion Smile

and what about making it possible for users to add their own widgets in the front end...

widgets are in high demand....

i think it would be possible now more than ever because netvibes has the UWA (Universal Widget Application?)

A cms hasn't this as purpose...it's another kind of software.. a cms is more a presentation or a community, while netviebes is a personal source aggregator. If i create a blog (because i want people to read what i wrote)... i don't want people to mess up with it. And what about the security? People should be able to include javascript in the site... and this is absolutely unacceptable.
Somebody could create a plugin that permits it.. that would be fine of course, but not something standard because it would be a dangerous script that i (and i'm sure almost everyone) wouldn't like to host.
