The changes.txt file explains it well, every single element that increment the contributes counter.

Elements that increase rating:
- Forum posts (1 point)
- Comments (2 points)
- Content rating (2 points)
- Content submission (5 points)

I am a lil puzzeled by this too. So do we need to set groups up first, add users to the groups so they can earn these contributes? Or does it happen by default?
